A gorgeous, rare antique, early Victorian Maltese Cross mourning pendant or locket.
Made from 9ct yellow gold the front is set with a faceted paste in a light yellow / clear colour, the reverse has a hairwork compartment filled with a lock of dark brown hair.
The points of the Maltese Cross are made from finely cut vibrant orange Carnelian panel, the top one having a gold bale fitting for hanging from a chain.
Perfect as a pendant or even an elaborate watch fob.
Unmarked tests as 9ct gold, early Victorian era, c1850s.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall with signs of age and use, some very light surface scratches, the hairwork compartment has some white residual marks underneath, it is sealed so not simple to open and clean, one Carnelian has a very slight fissure inside.
Approx measurements:
1.5" length with bale
