Welcome back to our monthly jewellery blog where we discuss all things bright and beautiful including our birthstone series which this blog is all about.
We love sapphires and are envious of all those that have this majestic stone as their birthstone, as you probably already guessed from the title Sapphire is the birthstone for September, they are also the anniversary stone for the 5th, 45th, and 70th anniversaries
Did you know that along with the many beautiful shades of blue we see in sapphires that they can also be other colours too?
Yep they do, they in fact come in almost all colours except red with certain naturally formed coloured stones in higher demand than others.
Sapphires are a variety of the mineral corundum, they are a very strong and durable stone only being beaten in this field by the mighty diamond, they have a hardness on the MOHs scale of 9 out of a possible 10.
Sapphires are one of the most treated stones as they can withstand high temperatures and are heated to enhance their colour and clarity, the largest known sapphire found is a 563 ct star sapphire aptly titled 'the star of India'.

They have been known to symbol loyalty, truth and peace for many centuries and have been worn by Royals and Nobles alike for their protective qualities and they take up to billions of years to form naturally in the earth, the earliest evidence of mined sapphires dates back to around 800BC.
We hope you enjoyed this short informative blog on Sapphires, we have some beautiful sapphire pieces available in the shop and who says it needs to be your birthstone to enjoy it's beauty!
Until next time, with love from the team at StolenAttic xoxo
