A very attractive antique, late 19th century gilt bronze table vesta.
Modelled as a hunting dog stalking a rabbit in its hole, there is a grassy recess to the top where matches are stored and there is a striking area to the side.
Very detailed and well made piece, it is mounted on a stained oak base.
Table vestas were designed to be displayed proud atop a counter or as the name suggests a table, often pride of place in a smoking room.
Since table vestas were not designed to be portable or carried around they could afford to have much more elaborate and beautiful designs, functional works of art.
The Victorians had a great knack for making everyday or functional items into works of art and smoking was a highly prized and social pastime.
Good condition overall, light surface wear, the dog is a little wobbly.
3" diameter at the base
