A great antique novelty go to bed match box / table vesta, in solid patinated bronze in the form of the Warwickshire bear and staff.

The heavy bronze bear has a lovely all over aged patina to him and small striking cold glass eyes, he is chained to the staff as depicted in the original coat of arms for Warwickshire.

The Warwickshire coat of arms of bear and staff can be traced back to around the 14th century, in medieval legends it is said to have derived from the name of the Earl in the days of King Arthur, being Arthgal which was linked to the Welsh word Artos (bear), the staff was said to have been introduced due to another Earl who killed a giant with the branch of a tree, traditionally it is the symbol of courage.

Condition:
Good condition overall, lots of aged patina, fixture for the eyes can be seen when lifting the head.
