An exceptionally fine, rare antique, Victorian sterling silver and bovine bone letter opener.

This particular example is beautifully designed, the blade and ferrule are sterling silver with engraving to the lower half, the reverse of the blade is hallmarked and the ferrule has an embossed Rd no.

The ferrule has a grand repousse design leading neatly to the bone handle.

The handle of the letter opener is carved from bovine bone as the head of a fox.

Very well designed, the foxes features are picked out with charred areas though it is not apparent if this is original to the piece or not.

Fully hallmarked for sterling silver, maker John Gilbert, Birmingham assay office, 1863

Good used condition overall with some surface wear and signs of use, nice clear hallmarks, the blade has a few fine scratches to it, the bone has some pitting and dark areas, a small shaded area near to the eye and some dryness, commensurate with age.

Approx measurements:
8.25" length
1.15" width at the widest point
Weighs approx 59.92 grams
