This antique Mid Victorian Garnet Cabochon brooch is delightfully beautiful.
Rich buttery 9ct bloomed yellow gold, the attractive Etruscan revival style featuring a repousse star or sunburst design with rope twist highlights.
This houses a big, deliciously juicy Garnet cabochon with a lovely rich red hue, a lovely stone, antique Garnets always have a wonderful mystical feel to them and have been used in fine jewels for centuries.
The reverse is currently open and this would have a glazed cover originally and probably held a keepsake such as a lock of hair from a loved one.
It fastens with an old c type clasp and pin fastener.
The gold is fairly thin so the majority of the weight on this piece comes from the lovely garnet cab.
Marks and era:
Unmarked, tests as 9ct gold, Victorian era, C1870s.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall, surface wear and signs of use commensurate with age, small pinholes in the gold mostly on the starburst sections, this can really only be seen when held up to the light but it's there, no glazing to the reverse, light nicks to the stone.
Approx measurements:
1.3" width
1" height / length
Weighs approx 4.79 grams
