A very well detailed and substantial antique French silver cicada brooch.

There is so much fine detailing on this piece and with that and the accuracy in size it has a very lifelike feel to it.

The Cicada has a long history in jewellery with examples found from the 4th and 5th centuries, usually belonging to nobles or the wealthy, the cicada is said to symbolise rebirth and longevity along with change or change of the self, becoming new.

They were very popular in France in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras as part of the Egyptian revival movement.

It has a pin and c type clasp fastener.

Marks and era:
Unmarked, tests as 800 silver, early 20th century, Art Nouveau era.

Condition:
Good used condition overall, light surface wear commensurate with age, some light surface wear, overall patina, some of the clasp fitting is base metal.
