This is truly one of the most spectacular and beautiful antique mourning brooches of its design.

It is a large sized brooch and can also be worn as a pendant, it is designed in a knot form with engraved tendrils forming the knot shape highlighted in black enamel, encompassing a central Swivel panel.

The swivel section has a glazed cover each side, one side containing an original hand painted portrait of a gentleman and the other a spray of Hairwork secured with tiny seed pearls.

Black enamel was commonly used on mourning jewellery and is said to represent death, while pearls are thought to represent tears.

It fastens with an old c type clasp and pin fastener.

A fine and exceptional piece of mourning jewellery.
