A truly magnificent antique Victorian era mourning locket in 18ct bloomed yellow gold.

Not all mourning jewellery was finished in dark colours such as black or cobalt blue and this fine example showcases the versatility of mourning pieces beautifully.

It is a large oval locket, heavily engraved to the front and reverse with an ivy leaf design to the front and a floral design to the reverse.

The front of the locket holds an applied gold ivy leaf set with creamy seed pearl and a single rose cut diamond.

It opens to reveal two original hand coloured portraits of a man and woman, possibly husband and wife, maybe mother and father to the mourner, beautiful and highly detailed in portraits which remain behind the original glazing.

The locket has a large integral bale for hanging from your favourite chain.

The Ivy leaf was often used in Victorian jewellery to symbol the everlasting or never ending, for a love that stays evergreen or a symbol of never forgetting.

Seed pearls were often used in mourning jewellery to represent tears.

A beautiful and sentimental piece, this would make an exemplary gift or a fine treat for yourself.

English make, mid Victorian era, unmarked tests as 18ct gold.

Condition:
Good used condition overall, some light surface wear and small marks near to the bale, some dust under the glazed covers, overall very well kept

Approx measurements:
2.25" length with bale
1.30" width
0.30" depth

Weight approx 19.35 grams.
