A scarce and unusual antique Victorian era brooch.

It is modelled as a horseshoe in sterling silver with bi colour, yellow and rose gold foliate overlay around the shoe.

An Assyrian revival piece, probably obtained from global travels this brooch depicts a Lamassu.

A Lamassu was an ancient diety or originally a goddess of protection, usually a combination of; human, bird, and either a bull or lion, the head always being human, this was eventually depicted as a hybrid human winged man as this brooch shows.

The Assyrian empire belief was that Lamassu were protective as they encompassed all life and were reprentatives of the zodiac and constellations.

The brooch has a locket back and contains an old photograph which seems to show a man in his travels or an expedition, it may have been sent as a gift of protection to a loved one.

It is a very unusual, well crafted brooch with so much attention to detail.

It has an old C type clasp and pin fastener.

The glazing has been later replaced by a clear plastic cover and the rim around the photo locket is made from brass.

Late Victorian era, c1890s, unmarked, tests as sterling silver.
