A truly beautiful and rare antique, Victorian era Mizpah brooch.

Crafted in rich rosey 9ct gold, this brooch is a scarce Mizpah piece, extremely detailed and well made.

It is designed as an artists palette, with a lily pad shape, the brooch has a beaded border and an attached gold safety chain with a bar pin.

It is engraved all over with repousse detailing of trailing flora, the word Mizpah and The Lord watch between thee and me when we are absent from one another.

Mizpah jewellery rose to popularity in the Victorian era, the meaning is always one of love and sentiment.

The word Mizpah has Hebrew origins and translates to watchtower, what has this to do with love? It has a religious connection meaning may God watch over you, this is said to be connected to the book of Genesis and the story of Laban and Jacob.

It has an old C type clasp and pin fastener.

This beautiful piece is fully hallmarked for 9ct gold, Birmingham assay office, 1893, maker William Twigg.
