This antique Victorian Whitby Jet and sterling silver locket is truly unique and incredibly beautiful.
This locket is an oval shape with a smooth polished jet front and back, mounted on a silver frame, the front has applied silver detailing of two Ivy leaves and an engraved love heart.
The heart is engraved: I cling to thee
Most likely a mourning piece, it probably contained a photo of lock of hair from a loved one.
A classic beauty with an unusual design, it is very well crafted.
Internally it has two glazed compartments and hallmarks for sterling silver.
Marks and era:
Fully hallmarked for sterling silver, Victorian era, London 1877
Condition:
Fair used condition overall, some age commensurate wear and signs of use, significant chip to one edge of the jet, old glue residue present likely from an old repair, snaps shut well.
Approx measurements:
1.75" width
2.5" length
