A very pretty late Victorian, silver and paste crescent brooch.

A beautiful curved moon set with pretty sparkling paste stones, resembling diamond with plenty of sparkle.

Paste jewellery despite being used as a low cost substitute for diamond on 18th to 20th century is now highly sought after in its own right.

It has a very long history with a form of paste dating all the way back to the Roman empire.

In the 18th century it experienced a surge and was made from heavy Flint glass, specially crafted to imitate the brilliance and fire of diamonds.

Crescent moons were a popular motif in Victorian and later Edwardian jewellery, they are attributed to a number of meanings from feminine strength to changes or new chapters.

The brooch is hallmarked on the reverse but this is so worn it is not legible, c1900, late Victorian era.

It has an old C type clasp.
