An absolutely stunning showstopper of a piece, for your consideration is this outstanding figural gilt bronze, combination inkstand and compass.

The incredible coiled snake forms the body of the inkstand, there are sculpted holes for a quill and access to the ink reservoir, he has red / orange glass eyes and on the top of the piece is a stunning globular crystal ball.

There is a compass inset into the base before the reservoir made by the renowned Short and Mason, London.

It's a heavy bronze sculptor, gilded and is a work of art in its own right, designed by none other than Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, famous English sculptor and natural history artist, famed for his life sized sculptures of dinosaurs in the Crystal Palace Park, London.

This piece is marked in two places with the makers name and the date (5th Feb 1850), once on the outer rim and when it opens up it is engraved boldly on the base.

It opens by way of a small push lever near to the base and this works and holds well.

The detailing is second to none, the base is covered with the original green velour backing and is further weighted for stability.

Overall it is in fantastic antique condition with little sign of wear, it dates from the early-mid Victorian period 1850.

Approx measurements:
16" circumference (base)

Many of Hawkins works can be found in museums across the globe and this is an incredible opportunity to own one of his prestigious works.
