A beautiful, fine antique Victorian mourning brooch.

Crafted in 9ct gold with a rich aged patina, the brooch has a naturalistic scrolling shape and design with lightly textured areas of gold.

The brooch has been finished in inky black enamel, the traditional mourning colour representing death.

Within the sea of black enamel there are delicate creamy seed pearl, set in gold making up a pretty floral display, the main forget me not flower set with a tiny rose cut diamond.

Pearls were thought to represent tears in mourning jewellery and the forget me not flower is a traditional symbol of remembrance.

To the verso of the brooch is a glazed locket compartment holding blonde hair, the glass has a crack to it but still holds strong.

The brooch us engraved Christopher Dobson, Died December 1st 1839, aged 82.

It fastens with an old c type clasp and pin fastener.

Unmarked, tests as 9ct gold, early Victorian era, C1830s.
