The Vinaigrette is a fine example of the Victorians creating useful, functional yet beautiful items.

Vinaigrettes rose to popularity in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the 19th century, they were used to hold any number of aromatic compounds dissolved in vinegar with a sponge to soak up the liquid, the tiny sponge was then placed in the vinaigrette, which usually had a grilled or pierced inner lid to allow the aroma out.

The compounds within were used for many purposes from medicinal to masking smells, used by both men and women and often hung from a chatelaine or chain.

This is perfect for adding to your favourite long chain or necklace.

This is a pretty example with a blank cartouche to the outer lid, the reverse engraved with ivy leaves, the inside is gilt lined and the grille is engraved with a floral design.
