A beautiful pair of Antique, Georgian era paste earrings.

Chunky little drops, set with clear old cut paste stones all in a closed back sterling silver collet setting.

They have silver ear wire fasteners, these are a later replacement and the earrings were probably part of a larger pair or double drop pair at one point.

So what is paste? Paste was a popular alternative to diamonds in the mid 18th century through to the Edwardian era, it is a type of Flint glass that has been hand cut to emulate gemstones, usually diamonds but sometimes other gemstones too.

It was used before the 18th century though with evidence of the Romans cutting coloured glass paste for imitation gems.

They are fairly heavy for a small pair of earrings, Unmarked, test as sterling silver, late 18th century.

Condition:
Good used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, overall patina, fasteners are a later replacement.

Approx measurements:
1" total length
0.75" width
0.5" drop

5.46 grams total combined weight
