This beautiful antique, late 19th century Lava Cameo brooch is a little different and unique.

It is very finely carved as the bust of Helios, an unusual subject and not one I have seen on a lava cameo before.

Helios is the God and personification of the Sun in Greek mythology and religion, he is also known as a keeper of oaths and the god of sight, this version of Helios is most like the classic Athens version.

It has typical dark beige and grey tones which you find on these volcanic ash wonders.

Lava Cameos and Lava stone jewellery rose to fashion in the Grand Tour era, early 19th century and continued in popularity throughout the century.

Made in Italy from Lava Ash and rock sculpted and carved into fine figures and set into jewellery for those on their grand tour travels to purchase and beautiful souvenirs.

This brooch is set into an oval shaped smooth 9ct rose gold mount and a 9ct gold safety catch and pin fastener, the clasp is a later replacement and is more of a yellow gold.

Lava cameos are highly prized and sought after pieces, they are becoming increasingly hard to find in surviving condition.

Condition:
Good used condition overall, light surface wear, commensurate with age, some light surface marks to the nose area, safety catch and pin are a later replacement.

Approx measurements:
1.5" length
0.85" width

Weighs approx 7.30 grams
