There is no piece of jewellery as classic and timeless as a choker necklace, like this antique black velvet mourning choker.

Hailing from the George IV era, a rare find, this beautiful choker is made from rich black velvet with a short pile.

The necklace fastens to the front with a mourning clasp in 9ct rose gold, the clasp featuring a plaited lock of light coloured hair under glazing.

It is engraved on the reverse John Leach, Ob June 26 1822 aet 73.

A decadent and rich beauty, hard to believe that the choker style was created and worn so long ago yet remains so relevant in today's jewellery styles.

A very attractive piece perfect for the collector of mourning jewellery.

Marks and era:
Unmarked for metal content tests as 9ct gold, slide part of the clasp is gold plated, velvet choker added later but of age, engraved 1822, c1820s.

Condition:
Fair used overall with signs of age and use, some light surface wear, stitching visible to the clasp and choker meet points, some wear to the slide clasp but functions well.

Approx measurements:
13" length
0.95" width
0.75" x 0.55" clasp
