This beautiful antique 18ct gold Mourning locket is really a very special piece.
Rich aged 18ct gold with an unusual and alluring honeycomb pattern applied to the front in inky black enamel, black being a commonly used colour on Mourning jewels and directly representing death.
Internally the locket features a glazed compartment for storing a precious picture or hairwork memento though it is currently vacant so you could place your own special piece inside.
Mourning jewels were a beautiful and poignant way of immortalising loved ones lost, keeping them close and holding them dear.
The reverse has a pretty engraved floral design and the locket has a rope twist border finishing it off nicely.
It has a bale ready to hang from your favourite antique chain or necklace.
Marks and era:
Victorian era, c1880s, unmarked, electronically tests as 18ct gold.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with signs of use and wear commensurate with age, there is a tiny mark to the reverse with some light surface wear and minor nicks to the enamel, you have to push it shut firmly so it stays closed and doesn't spring open but it does hold closed once closed fully.
