A beautiful and unusual antique, Victorian era mourning locket.

Not all mourning jewellery screams mourning in its design and this is one of those pieces that retains some subtlety.

Crafted in rich 18ct gold the front of the locket has a unique combination of designs and colours that really make this piece stand out.

It has a black enamel Greek key border, the centre set with a smooth polished chalcedony with blue tones.

It features a pearl set cross to the centre and can hold a photograph or tiny memento within, it is currently empty so can be filled with your own memento.

There are various aspects of symbology to the locket, the cross represents the connection with the Christian faith and being with Christ.

Black enamel on mourning jewellery was used to represent death and pearls were said to symbolise tears.

Unmarked, tests as 18ct gold, Late Victorian era c1880s.

A fine and unusual piece of mourning jewellery.
