A scarce and unusual antique Victorian era brooch.

An Assyrian revival piece, probably obtained from global travels this brooch depicts a Lamassu.

A Lamassu was an ancient diety or originally a goddess of protection, usually a combination of; human, bird, and either a bull or lion, the head always being human, this was eventually depicted as a hybrid human winged man as this brooch shows.

The Assyrian empire belief was that Lamassu were protective as they encompassed all life and were reprentatives of the zodiac and constellations.

The brooch has a beaded silver border and is a circular shape.

It is an unusual and well crafted brooch with so much attention to detail.

It has an old C type clasp and pin fastener with an added safety chain.
