This rare antique Victorian dog portrait locket is really quite special.
Pets were prized in the Victorian era as much as they are today, just as we see mourning or commemorative pieces for loved ones we too see them for pets, albeit not so often.
This magical locket features a 19th century enameled copper portrait of a black and white dog, I'm unsure of the breed, someone's beloved pet.
The miniature portrait has been set to the front of an antique 9ct yellow gold front and back locket, the reverse engraved with flora and it has a small banner cartouche, no engraving so could be personalised if desired.
The work and intricacy that has gone into the portrait is evident and the love for the pet shines through every little bit of this piece.
There is no glazing to the front or internally and it has an attractive faceted gold jump ring bale.
This one is a treasure!
Marks and era:
Late Victorian era c1890s, portrait possibly earlier, unmarked, locket is 9ct gold front and back.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall with signs of use and wear commensurate with age, small ding to the locket reverse, portrait miniature with some nicks to the enamel.
Approx measurements:
1.5" length with bale
0.75" width
8.74 grams weight
